Warehouse Management System Development

Custom WMS Software for Warehouses Where the Count Never Matches the Shelf

The system says 400 units in aisle 12. The shelf holds 380. Nobody knows when the other 20 left, and a customer order was just promised against stock that is not there.

SolGuruz builds warehouse management system software that keeps the records and the shelf in agreement. Every receipt, move, pick, and adjustment is recorded when it happens, not fixed at the end of the week.

We start by measuring how accurate your stock records are today, then build toward a number you can hold. You own the code and the data model from the first commit.

What Is a Warehouse Management System?

A warehouse management system (WMS) manages inventory inside a warehouse. It tracks incoming stock, decides where to store it, guides picking, and records what leaves the warehouse.

Off-the-shelf WMS software works well for standard warehouse operations. A custom warehouse management system makes sense when your storage rules, equipment, or handling needs are more complex.

Our logistics software development work connects the warehouse management system to the order, transport, and finance systems around it, so stock movements reach every team that needs them without anyone retyping a number.

What Your Warehouse Management System Decides Every Day

Six decisions. Each one either keeps your stock records accurate or breaks them.

1. Where does this pallet go?

Fast-moving stock goes near dispatch, heavy stock stays at floor level, and chilled products go in the right zone. Good putaway reduces extra work later.

2. Which stock fills this order?

The system can follow rules such as oldest stock first, earliest expiry first, or closest stock first. This helps reduce waste and picking errors.

3. Which path should the picker take?

The system plans an efficient picking path while considering warehouse zones, equipment limits, and access rules.

4. Which orders get picked together?

Orders can be picked individually, in batches, or as part of a larger wave. The best method depends on the type and volume of orders.

5. What gets counted, and when?

Regular cycle counts help keep inventory records accurate. The system can identify discrepancies and prioritize locations for counting.

6. Is the record still true?

Every scan confirms or changes the inventory record. The system should flag differences instead of hiding them.

A wrong answer to decision 1 shows up weeks later as a failed pick, when the picker reaches the location and the stock is not where the record says it is. That is why putaway rules get the most attention during discovery.

What Stock Accuracy Actually Means

Stock accuracy is more than one number. These six measures show whether your warehouse management system is keeping inventory records accurate.

MeasureWhat it countsWhy it matters
Location accuracyHow often the system quantity matches what is on the shelfThe headline number. Below 97% and picks start failing
Item accuracyHow often an item is correct across all the places it is storedCatches the item that is right in one place and wrong in three
Pick accuracyHow often a pick has the right item, quantity and batchThis is what the customer sees
Receiving accuracyHow often a delivery is recorded correctly first timeMistakes here multiply through everything after
Count coverageHow much of the warehouse gets counted in a rolling periodAccuracy you cannot see is accuracy you cannot claim
Manual adjustmentsHow often and how much stock gets corrected by handThe one nobody reports. High numbers mean people are working around the system

Read these measures together, because a strong location score can hide a weak receiving score.

Warehouse Management System Development Services We Deliver

Each of these works as a standalone project or as one module inside a larger build.

Storage Planning and Pick Path Development

Built on our backend development work, this engine decides where each item lives based on how fast it moves, its weight and size, and what it cannot be stored next to. It then plans the shortest walk to collect every line on an order and stays steady when 300 orders release at once during a morning wave.

Receiving, Putaway and Counting Module Development

What happens at the inbound door decides everything after it. We build advance notice matching, blind and directed receiving, quality holds, cross-docking, and directed putaway. Counting runs alongside, checking the busiest locations first rather than working through the building alphabetically.

Barcode, RFID and Warehouse Hardware Integration

A WMS is only as accurate as what the floor scans. We connect handheld and wearable scanners, truck-mounted terminals, label printers, weigh scales, dimension scanners and RFID readers. Every device gets tested where it will actually be used, because a scanner that works at a desk behaves differently in a chilled aisle.

Warehouse Control System and Robotics Orchestration

Conveyors, sorters, and robots need one system telling them what to do next. Our machine learning development work adds demand-based slotting to that control layer, so fast movers get relocated before peak rather than after it. The layer also assigns work across equipment, handles exceptions, and keeps the WMS and the machines agreeing on where stock is.

Multi-Client Warehouse Management Development

When one building holds stock for several owners, the WMS has to know whose pallet is whose from the moment it arrives. We build stock ownership into every location, apply each owner's putaway and picking rules, and record every activity against the right account, ready for billing.

WMS Integration and Migration Services

Moving from Manhattan, Blue Yonder, Körber, or SAP EWM requires transferring item data, locations, inventory balances, and movement history. This is legacy application modernization work. We clean and validate the data, test both systems, and move the warehouse in phases.

When Do You Need a Custom Warehouse Management System?

Packaged WMS software works well for standard warehouse operations. A custom system makes sense when your warehouse has rules or processes that standard software cannot handle.

Your stock accuracy has stopped improving

If you have improved processes and trained staff but inventory accuracy is still low, your system may not be recording what happens on the warehouse floor correctly.

Your storage rules cannot be set up in the product

You may need to consider product movement, weight, temperature, and hazard class when deciding where stock goes. Standard products may not support all these rules together.

You store and pick for several clients

Storing stock for other companies needs a different build than running your own warehouse. Our 3PL warehouse management software is designed for that setup from the start.

Your handling needs are unusual

Serial numbers, variable weights, dangerous goods, kitting, assembly, and return grading all require specific inventory and workflow rules.

You run equipment the product does not recognize

Conveyors, sorters, label printers, scales, and robots may need custom integrations when they are not supported by your existing WMS.

You are opening a second warehouse

Moving stock between sites and sharing one item list across buildings is where many single-site products fall short. Transfers get recorded twice or not at all, and sales cannot see total stock across locations.

Rapid POC development on one zone of your warehouse tests these signs against your own count history. A short pilot shows how far your current records drift from what is actually on the shelf.

Not Sure Custom Is the Right Call?

Tell us which of these you recognize, and we will say honestly if a product would do.

Compliance and Traceability Inside Your Warehouse

Some stock cannot simply be stored and picked. The system has to prove what happened to it.

What your warehouse handlesWhat the system enforces
Food and beverageSoonest expiry picked first, batch tracking, allergens kept apart, temperature logs per zone
Pharmaceutical and medicalSerial numbers, controlled drug records, EU GDP and US FDA storage conditions, recall tracing in minutes
Dangerous goodsSegregation rules applied at putaway, quantity limits per zone, ADR and PHMSA storage classes
Alcohol and duty-paid goodsBonded stock kept separate, duty status per pallet, movement records for customs
High-value goodsRestricted zone access, two-person picking, full custody record per unit

A recall is the real test. If you cannot trace every unit of one batch to the order it shipped on within an hour, the traceability was decoration. Stock adjustments also carry a reason code and the count that triggered them, so an auditor can follow each change back to its source.

WMS Integration: Systems and Hardware We Connect Your Warehouse Management System To

A warehouse management system connects the scanners and machines on your floor with the ERP, store, and carrier systems in your office.

ConnectionWhat we work withWhat it changes
ERP and financeSAP, Oracle NetSuite, Microsoft Dynamics, QuickBooks, XeroStock value updates automatically, so finance and the floor agree at month-end
Order and ecommerceShopify, WooCommerce, Amazon, Supply'd, custom order systemsOrders reach the floor without a morning import, and stock availability stays live
Transport and carriersYour TMS, FedEx, UPS, DHL, regional carriersA pick is not finished until a label exists, and dispatch knows what is ready
Scanning and mobile devicesZebra, Honeywell, Datalogic handhelds, wearables, truck-mounted terminalsEach scan updates the stock record on the spot, with no paper lists to key in at shift end
Automation and roboticsConveyors, sorters, robots, automated storage, pick-to-lightThe equipment is told what to do next by the same system holding the stock record
Labeling and measurementLabel printers, weigh scales, dimension scanners, RFID readersWeight and size are captured at source, which is what makes carrier pricing accurate

The ERP connection causes the most trouble in WMS integration. If the two systems disagree on what a unit of measure means, every stock value on the balance sheet inherits that error. NetSuite WMS integration and Shopify WMS integration are the two most requested, and both need the item list matched up before a single record moves.

When the same orders also need freight rating and carrier booking, transportation management system development connects to them without re-entering shipment details.

Once stock leaves your dock on your own trucks, fleet management software tracks the vehicle and its driver, so dispatch knows which truck is carrying which order.

Our Warehouse Management System Development Process

Five stages, from inventory cleanup to a phased warehouse go-live. Picking continues throughout the process.

01

Inventory Audit and Cleanup (2-3 weeks)

We check enough locations and items across different zones to establish your actual inventory accuracy. We also review the item list for duplicate codes, missing dimensions, and inconsistent units of measure. Finding these issues early helps avoid costly problems later.

Deliverables: Accuracy baseline by measure, item list report, location map review, fixed-scope estimate and timeline.
02

Warehouse Process Mapping (1-2 weeks, alongside Stage 1)

Our team follows the actual flow of goods, from receiving to storage and from order release to dispatch. This helps uncover rules that are often missed in documentation, such as special wrapping, problem aisles, or items that need manual entry.

Deliverables: Inbound and outbound process maps, exception list, equipment and device inventory, zone rules documented.
03

Receiving and Putaway Build (5-8 weeks)

Receiving, putaway, and stock movement come first because they create the data used by the rest of the system. Scanner integrations are added at this stage. By the end, incoming stock can be received, stored, moved, and located in the system.

Deliverables: Receiving and putaway modules, stock movement engine, scanner integration, location and zone setup in staging.
04

Picking and Dispatch (3-5 weeks)

Picking, packing, dispatch, and returns are added using live inbound data. Slotting and pick path logic comes after real movement data is available. We test the logic against your order history to see whether it can reduce picker travel.

Deliverables: Picking and packing workflow, slotting engine tested against real orders, dispatch and returns modules, counting logic.
05

Go-Live by Zone (2-4 weeks, then ongoing)

The new system runs alongside your existing process without controlling warehouse operations at first. Weekly counts help us compare both systems and identify differences. After approval, stock moves to the new system one zone at a time, starting with bulk storage and ending with pick faces.

Deliverables: Weekly comparison reports, exception log, zone migration plan, floor training, accuracy dashboard.

Warehouse size, zones, and equipment usually shape the timeline more than the development work does. A single-zone warehouse with handheld scanners moves faster than a multi-zone site with sorters and several conveyor lines.

What Does Warehouse Management System Development Cost?

A custom warehouse management system typically costs $20,000 to $50,000+ and takes 12 to 20+ weeks to build. Five things move the number: how many zones you run, how complex your storage rules are, how much automation you connect, how many sites you run, and how clean your item list is when we start.

Build typeWhat it coversTimelineInvestment
Core WMSSingle site, receiving, putaway, picking, counting, handheld scanning12-16 weeks$20,000-$35,000
Multi-module WMSSlotting engine, ERP and order integration, returns, labeling, multiple zones16-20 weeks$35,000-$45,000
Enterprise WMS platformRobotics and conveyor control, warehouse control system, multiple sites, full traceability20+ weeks$50,000+

Your site count and the workflows you need on day one decide where you start in this table. After the stock count audit, we replace the range with a single price for your warehouse.

Automation shapes the price more than anything else. A warehouse running handheld scanners is a different build from one running a sorter, three conveyor lines, and a fleet of robots, and the second is where most of the cost sits.

Item list condition comes next, and nobody budgets for it. A clean catalog moves in weeks. One with duplicate codes, wrong dimensions and mixed units of measure adds a month before anything else can start.

See how much logistics software development cost can vary by module, feature, and integration in our detailed guide.

Industries We Build Warehouse Management Systems For

Every warehouse looks similar from the door and behaves differently inside. What a system has to enforce changes completely based on what you store.

Ecommerce and Direct-to-Consumer Fulfillment

Single-item picks at high volume, returns arriving all day, and peak periods that triple throughput for six weeks. Grouping orders matters more than moving pallets, and grading returns is the process most systems handle worst.

Retail and Wholesale Distribution

Store replenishment and wholesale pallet orders come from the same stock on different cycles. Cross-docking, returns from stores, and seasonal range changes all need the system to move stock without losing the record.

Food and Beverage Distribution

Expiry dates drive every pick decision, and allergen rules drive every putaway one. Variable weights, carton-to-unit conversion and temperature zones all sit in the data model rather than on top of it, which is why a general product rarely fits.

Cold Storage and Frozen Warehousing

For cold storage operators, every minute a pallet sits outside its temperature zone is a risk. Our custom software development services build the WMS to track dwell time at the dock, assign putaway by temperature band, and flag stock that has been out of range too long.

Pharmaceutical and Medical Distribution

For pharmaceutical and medical distributors, our healthcare software development teams build warehouse systems that hold serial numbers, controlled drug records, and validated storage conditions.

Manufacturing and Industrial Distribution

Raw materials, part-finished goods, and finished stock move under different rules through the same building. Kitting, light assembly, and customer-owned stock each change what a stock record has to hold.

Technologies Behind Your Warehouse Management System

We build on frameworks that hold up under shipment volume, live tracking loads and continuous integration traffic.

Why Choose SolGuruz as Your Warehouse Management System Development Company

A warehouse system needs to work on the floor, not just on paper. Our approach focuses on real warehouse workflows, accurate inventory data, practical integrations, and a smooth transition to the new system.

The Floor Team Tests It Before Go-Live

Pickers, receivers, and forklift operators test the system in real warehouse conditions before go-live. Their feedback helps us improve screens, scanning steps, and workflows before the system goes live.

We Design for Gloves, Cold and Bad Light

A freezer aisle at minus 20C kills batteries and slows touchscreens. A dusty yard makes labels unreadable. We choose devices and design screens against the worst spot in your building, not the best one.

Your Item List Gets Fixed, Not Worked Around

Duplicate codes, wrong dimensions and mixed units of measure turn up in almost every warehouse we walk into. We clean them before the build rather than coding around them, because every workaround becomes permanent.

Counting Runs While the Building Runs

We build counting that targets the locations most likely to have drifted and fits between waves. Your team stops needing a weekend stock take to find out where they stand.

One Zone at a Time, Slowest Stock First

Go-live starts with bulk storage, where a problem costs hours. Pick faces go last. Nothing moves until the parallel count agrees, and the old system stays readable for a full count cycle after.

Certified to ISO 27001:2022 and ISO 9001:2015

Both independently audited. ISO 27001:2022 covers information security, which matters when your WMS holds supplier pricing, stock values, and customer order data. ISO 9001:2015 covers delivery quality, and it is behind our 99.9% on-time delivery rate and zero abandoned projects since 2019.

The Warehouse Manager Changes the Rules

Movement speed bands, zone rules, handling requirements and count frequencies sit in a settings screen your manager edits. A new storage rule is an afternoon, not a release.

A Delivery Record Behind the Build
