Wine & Co's Alcohol Delivery App

How SolGuruz Built a Wine Delivery App Across Four Connected Apps

This case study covers Wine & Co, an alcohol delivery platform that SolGuruz designed and built across four mobile applications (customer app, wine store app, delivery driver app, admin app) plus a Shopify-powered eCommerce website.

The platform handles end-to-end wine and liquor delivery: customer discovery and ordering, wine store inventory and order acceptance, delivery driver navigation and proof of delivery, and admin oversight of orders, payments, and operations.

Built on Flutter for cross-platform mobile (iOS + Android), Node.js backend, Shopify for eCommerce, and Firebase for real-time order sync with age verification, payment gateway integration, GPS-driven delivery tracking, and compliance workflows for the on-demand alcohol delivery category

Project Overview

Wine & Co partnered with SolGuruz to build a complete alcohol delivery platform with customer ordering, store management, driver delivery, and admin operations in one connected ecosystem.

Unlike generic delivery apps, the platform required built-in alcohol compliance features such as age verification, ID checks at delivery, restricted delivery rules, and real-time order tracking across all user roles.

SolGuruz developed a scalable 4-app architecture using Flutter, Shopify, Node.js, and Firebase. The solution included customer, store, driver, and admin apps with live sync, secure payments, inventory management, and real-time delivery workflows.

What Is an Alcohol Delivery App?

An alcohol delivery app is an on-demand mobile application that lets customers order wine, beer, spirits, and other alcoholic beverages for delivery to their location, typically operating with age verification at signup, ID verification at delivery, state-by-state licensing compliance, real-time delivery tracking, and PCI-DSS-grade payment processing.

Four primary models:

Single-brand alcohol delivery apps: Brand-owned platforms representing a single liquor retailer or wine merchant with a curated catalog and direct customer relationship

Marketplace alcohol delivery apps: Multi-retailer platforms aggregating inventory from local liquor stores under one customer experience (Drizly, Saucey, Minibar)

On-demand delivery integrations: Generic delivery platforms with alcohol as one category among many (DoorDash, Uber Eats with Drizly partnership, Postmates Liquor)

Direct-to-consumer wine clubs: Subscription-based wine delivery with curated monthly selections (Winc, Firstleaf, Bright Cellars)

Wine & Co - Single-Brand Alcohol Delivery Platform

Wine & Co is a single-brand alcohol delivery platform combining brand-owned wine and liquor delivery with a 4-app architecture, a Shopify-powered website, and integrated age verification.

Orders placed on the customer app are received instantly by the wine store, assigned to a delivery driver, and tracked in real time from dispatch to doorstep.

How Does an Alcohol Delivery App Work?

An alcohol delivery app flows from customer order to delivered product across six stages, with compliance checkpoints woven into the flow:

1

Customer Onboarding & Age Verification

Users sign up via the customer app or website with email and phone verification. Age verification at signup requires the user to confirm 21+ (US) or 18+ (other jurisdictions) and may require government ID upload depending on local regulations. Failed age verification blocks the account from placing alcohol orders.

2

Catalog Discovery & Wine Selection

Customers browse the curated alcohol catalog organised by category (red wine, white wine, sparkling, beer, spirits, cocktails), region (Napa Valley, Bordeaux, Tuscany), price range, and varietal (Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay). Each product surfaces high-resolution imagery, tasting notes, vintage year, ABV (alcohol by volume), and customer ratings. Search supports producer, varietal, and food-pairing queries.

3

Cart, Checkout & Payment Processing

Customers add products to cart, apply discount codes, select delivery address, and confirm checkout. Payment processing routes through PCI-DSS compliant gateway with 3D Secure authentication. Order confirmation triggers wine store notification and creates the order record visible to admin oversight.

4

Wine Store Order Acceptance & Preparation

Wine store staff receive the order in their dedicated Wine Store App, accept the order, pick the products from inventory, and mark the order ready for driver pickup. Wine store inventory updates in real-time across the customer app to prevent over-selling.

5

Delivery Driver Pickup & Navigation

Delivery drivers receive the assigned order in their Delivery Driver App with pickup address, delivery address, GPS-driven turn-by-turn navigation, customer phone number, and order details. Drivers confirm pickup at the wine store and navigate to the customer.

6

ID Verification & Proof of Delivery

At delivery, the driver verifies the customer is 21+ (or local minimum) by scanning or visually inspecting government ID. Failed ID verification triggers order return to the wine store with full refund. Successful delivery captures customer signature and photo proof of delivery, then closes the order across all four apps.

Wine storage and inventory management

Why Did Wine & Co Need a Custom Alcohol Delivery App?

Wine & Co identified four operational gaps that off-the-shelf delivery platforms could not solve:

Brand-Owned Customer Relationship vs Marketplace Dilution

Listing on Drizly, Saucey, or Minibar gives Wine & Co marketplace reach but flattens the brand identity into one of dozens of liquor stores in the marketplace. A custom alcohol delivery app under the Wine & Co brand owns the customer relationship, the curation experience, and the loyalty programme without the marketplace economics that compress retailer margins.

Compliance-First Architecture Beyond Generic Delivery Apps

Generic on-demand delivery apps (DoorDash, Uber Eats) bolt alcohol delivery onto food delivery infrastructure and treat compliance as an add-on. Specialised alcohol delivery requires age verification at signup, ID verification at delivery, state-by-state licensing rules, restricted-hours enforcement, and dry-county exclusions - these belong in the platform foundation, not in a compliance plugin. The Wine & Co build wove compliance into every workflow from day one.

4-App Real-Time Sync for Alcohol-Specific Operations

Alcohol delivery has stricter operational rules than food delivery: orders cannot leave the wine store without verified driver pickup, deliveries cannot complete without verified ID at the door, returns must trace back to the original wine store inventory. The 4-app architecture (customer + store + driver + admin) with real-time Firebase sync ensures every state transition is logged and auditable.

Higher AOV Requires Higher-Grade Payment Infrastructure

Wine and spirits orders run $50-$300+ AOV vs $20-$50 for food delivery. Higher AOV attracts higher-value fraud attempts, stolen credit cards, account takeover attacks, friendly fraud chargebacks. PCI-DSS-grade payment processing with 3D Secure, tokenised card storage, and fraud detection scoring is required, not optional. Generic delivery app payment infrastructure typically does not meet this bar.

What Solutions Did SolGuruz Deliver?

SolGuruz delivered Wine & Co as a complete engagement covering design, build, compliance integration, payment processing, and launch. The solution had five core components:

4-App Flutter Architecture (Customer + Store + Driver + Admin)

Single Flutter codebase delivering four distinct mobile applications with role-specific UX surfaces. Customer App for ordering, Wine Store App for order acceptance and inventory management, Delivery Driver App for pickup/navigation/delivery, and Admin App for operational oversight. All four apps share the underlying SDK with role-specific UX surfaces. Real-time order sync via Firebase keeps every state transition visible across all four apps simultaneously.

Shopify-Powered eCommerce Website

Shopify website for desktop and mobile web ordering. Catalog management, product detail pages, cart and checkout flow, payment processing, and order management all run through Shopify's native infrastructure. Shopify's built-in PCI-DSS compliance and fraud protection cover the payment-side compliance burden. Website orders sync into the same backend that handles app orders for unified fulfillment.

Age Verification & ID-at-Delivery Compliance Workflow

Age verification at customer signup with confirmation flow plus optional government ID upload depending on local jurisdiction. ID verification at delivery integrated into the Driver App - driver scans or visually inspects ID, confirms or rejects, and the order state updates in real time. Failed ID verification triggers automated return-to-store workflow with full customer refund.

GPS Tracking & Real-Time Order Status

Google Maps integration for driver navigation from wine store pickup to customer delivery. The customer app shows real-time driver location and ETA. Admin app shows a live map of all active deliveries with status (assigned, picked up, in transit, delivered) for operational oversight.

Backend Infrastructure & Payment Processing

Node.js backend handling cross-app order orchestration, inventory sync, driver assignment logic, notification fan-out, and admin reporting. Firebase Authentication for user accounts and a real-time database for order state sync. Payment gateway integration with PCI-DSS compliance and 3D Secure authentication for fraud prevention. AWS infrastructure with HTTPS / TLS 1.3, automated backups, and DDoS protection.
